The North American Hair Research Society
(NAHRS) was founded in 1990 by a group of dermatologists in order
to provide a forum for promoting hair research and to facilitate
communication on hair disorders between and among clinicians and
basic researchers. Two annual national and every
3 year international meetings, sponsored by the NAHRS,
have been, until recently, the primary means of presenting the latest
information on hair and its growth to researchers in the field.
However, in 2001 the NAHRS sponsored the first of what we hope are
many workshops on hair, this one being on cicatricial (scarring)
alopecia. The findings of that meeting were subsequently published
in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology in February
2003. Out of this effort is a recently (2004) initiated multicenter
study on the causes of scarring hair loss in African American women.
Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of male and female pattern
hair loss have also been developed and submitted for publication.
The NAHRS has since then developed several other new avenues for
promoting research in hair including establishing grants for specific
hair research projects and for mentorships. Research grants were
distributed in 2003 and 2004. Six and seven mentorship grants were
given in 2003 and 2004, respectively. The mentorship
grants allow young physician/scientists to work closely
for a limited period with someone who has
expertise in an area of hair research or hair disorders that they
wish to focus on in their future careers.
Bosley Medical, Inc currently funds the mentorship grants through
2006. The NAHRS hair research grants, however, do not have renewable
funding in place: this is an area of acute need
for the NAHRS. The NAHRS is in need of support for advancing research
projects and to put in place new website initiatives such as a registry
of various rare or uncommon hair disorders. We
feel communication is key to moving forward in promoting better
understanding of hair disorders and their treatment.
The NAHRS is a nonprofit organization that welcomes and needs
your financial support. All donations are tax deductible
(the NAHRS is a 501-C3 organization). Contributions can
be made in the name of a special family member or friend: all contributors,
and their honorees, if there is one, will be listed on this website
at the end of each year. Within broad categories, donations may
also be designated for a particular area of hair research.
If you are interested in making a donation, please download the attached form, fill out and FAX to Janet L. Roberts MD, Secretary-Treasurer, NAHRS at 503-223-1947. If you are considering a contribution and wish to discuss a potential contribution further, indicate an email address or phone number on the attached form so that someone from the Society can be in touch with you.
